Overview

This primary responsibility of this position is to perform histotechnology duties including preparation and processing of human and animal tissues for microscopic review using a cryostat or microtome and proper histological techniques.  This work includes making judgments as needed for processing different tissue types, embedding and sectioning samples, examining sections of embedded tissue under a microscope to ensure specimen integrity, and staining and cover slipping for analysis of research tissues.  This also includes processing, embedding, sectioning and staining of formalin fixed/paraffin embedded or frozen surgical tissues and processing other human bodily fluids for storage in the EVMS Biorepository.  Tissue staining includes H&E, special stains and Immunohistochemistry techniques.  Other duties include but are not limited to properly logging samples, instrument maintenance and troubleshooting as needed.  Maintaining laboratory cleanliness in essential to ensure a safe work environment. Applicant must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with EVMS Biorepository staff as well as researchers.

Responsibilities

Technical/Lab Responsibilities

  • Prepares sections of human/animal tissue for microscopic examination, using principles and knowledge of histology technique.
  • Processes biorepository specimens
  • Performs required quality control procedures for compliance with all local, state, and federal laws.
  • Cares for, maintains and documents required maintenance on laboratory equipment, instruments, and accessories in accordance with CLIA and/or CAP regulations.
  • Follows all safety precautions when using chemicals and reagents demonstrating knowledge of CLIA and OSHA standards.
  • Properly disposes of contaminated waste using universal precautions, CLIA, and OSHA regulations.
  • Cleans, stocks and inventories the laboratory.
  • Ensures that all equipment, instruments, and accessories are operational daily. Reports any irregularities to Laboratory Manager.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with scientists and Biorepository staff.
  • Attends research meetings and offers insight and advice to prospective collaborators.
  • Maintains patient confidentiality according to HIPAA rules and regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Accreditation

  • Familiarizes self with CAP accreditation standards.
  • Identifies areas of noncompliance.
  • Recommends action to Biorepository manager and Director to become and maintain compliance.

 

Qualifications

Associate’s degree (graduate of a school of Histotechnology preferred), plus three (3) years of experience. Comprehensive knowledge of routine and complex histological laboratory procedures, techniques, and instruments required. 

 

ASCP certified HT/HTL or the ability to obtain within six (6) months of employment.
