Overview

Function as an independent nurse to maintain all aspects of the Occupational Health Program to include (but not limited to) Safety, Worker’s Compensation, Infection Control, and Compliance.

Responsibilities

Ensure smooth work flow by providing adequate staff to assigned clinical areas.

 

Display courteous behavior and provide excellent customer service to patients, visitors, providers and co-workers.

 

Contribute to the well-being of patients by serving as a positive role model and demonstrating a professional, caring attitude towards co-workers, patients, and guests.

 

 

Answer incoming telephone calls and refer/transfer calls as appropriate and as necessary. Take messages, page doctors when appropriate, handle hospital consults, and answer inquiries.

 

Assist administrative assistant with appointments, scheduling, referrals & authorizations, answering telephone, taking messages and registering patients according to practice protocol.

 

Ensure that patients are arrived and triaged from reception area to clinical area within a timely manner.

 

Prepare exam rooms for patient visits and restock the clinical area and exam rooms. Sterilize instruments when used and maintain medical equipment.

 

Supervise the cleanliness of exam rooms. Ensure that exam rooms are replenished and organized daily.

 

Maintain inventory of medical and pharmaceutical supplies for the clinical area to ensure availability for testing and regular daily activities.  Provide Director with needed financial data on expenditures.

 

Provide patient education verbally and by providing written materials.

 

Perform pre-placement health assessments for new hires.

 

Perform urine drugs screenings for new hires to include collection and assurance of chain of custody of specimens.

 

Administer vaccinations and tuberculin skin tests.

 

Perform phlebotomy.

 

Order laboratory testing and interpret results; make clinical recommendations based on results.

 

Triage work-related injuries and illnesses.

 

Provide medical evaluation for human blood and body fluid exposures.  Order necessary lab tests on employees/students and on source patient per protocol.  Administer antiretroviral medication post-exposure per protocol.

 

Provide medical evaluation for animal exposures, including non-human primate exposures.  Order necessary tests for employees related to exposures.

 

Obtain completed Medical Record Release forms from patients/students requesting copies of their medical records and/or requesting that they be sent to other providers/practices.

 

Record all pertinent patient information in Electronic Medical Record (EMR).

 

Appropriately document interventions in the EMR. Review the chart for completeness, test results, and billing. Bill accurately and completely for all appropriate procedures and encounters.

 

 

Follow EVMS protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality.  Complete annual recertification for Blood Borne Pathogens, HIPAA Compliance Training, Respiratory FIT, IT Policy, and others as assigned.  

 

Maintain clinical competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality patient care, which include validation of skill level by passing both verbal and written tests administered by Director.

 

Promote the philosophy, goals and objectives of the School and the Department by becoming familiar with and complying with policies and procedures.

 

Review medical records for incoming Volunteers, Visiting Students/Physicians, Residents and Students to assure compliance with Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommendations for immunizations and tuberculosis screening for health care providers.

 

Write reports, correspondence, and policies as assigned.

 

Assist in the orientation of new Occupational Health staff.

 

Take after-hours exposure call per assigned rotation schedule.

 

Perform other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

Completion of RN is required, preferably from an NLN Accredited School of Nursing. BSN preferred. At least two years of relevant nursing experience is preferred. Previous experience in Occupational Health setting is preferred. Must be a licensed RN in the state of Virginia.

 

Experience with Occupational Health Manager (OHM) is preferred

The ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities

Knowledge of Microsoft Office

Attention to detail and strong critical thinking skills

Knowledge and proficiency in urine drug screening procedures, vaccine administration, phlebotomy, and tuberculin skin testing placement/interpretation
