Overview

Provides support to the billing division to include data entry, denials, patient interaction, patient account research, and insurance referrals, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Submits Encounter Forms through Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Key/Data entry all charges into the E H R/ IDX WED-Extend based on division(s) assignment.
  • Schedules Appointments.
  • Is prepared and organized for the daily schedule.
  • Assists with maintaining patient records through the E H R.
  • Assists patients/customers with insurance information and balances
  • Ensures doctor(s) submit notes in a timely manner in order to process claims efficiently.
  • Review and compare Sentara Norfolk General surgery posting report to what has been key into the IDX and E H R system to ensure all charges are accounted.
  • Batches charge tickets to send to EVMS Health Services when charges are not keyed by Surgery staff.
  • Interviews patients to obtain personal, financial and medical information, and creates patient electronic medical charts.
  • Verifies insurance information by calling carrier if applicable.
  • Receives payments from patients, writes receipts and writes daily cash journals following cash receipt policy. 
  • Responds to inquiries from patients and researches accounts.
  • May work at reception desk to provide back up as needed.
  • Must possess the ability and skill to work well in a team environment. 

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and minimum of one year of patient billing experience.  Medical applications software experience preferred.  Knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT coding required.  Customer service oriented individual is required. Type at least 55 WPM.  Certified Professional Coder (CPC) preferred.
