  • Overview

    Serves as the Department Administrator for Department of Family and Community Medicine.
    Supervises office managers at Ghent Family Medicine and Portsmouth Family Medicine, and provides indirect supervision to all classified staff.
    Reports to Executive Director of EVMS Health Services and the department chair; supports the department vice chair for clinical affairs


    1. Maintains supportive relationship with the Dean, EVMS Health Services Chief Executive Officer, department vice chair for clinical affairs, medical or clinical directors, faculty physicians and other providers, Associate Dean for Health Affairs, Business Managers, technical coordinators, EVMS Health Services administrative support staff and other office and practice mangers.
    2. Administers the recruitment, selection, assignment and training of support staff; approves all matters relating to employee evaluations, transfers, promotions, discipline, terminations and resignations.
    3. Ensures proper orientation of all providers and support staff.
    4. Provides personnel with clear explanations of their responsibilities and encourages the freedom to do creative problem solving.
    5. Responsible for development, tracking and expenditures for all budgets.
    6. Performs cost analysis of patient care services, research endeavors and educational programs proposed and provided by the department.
    7. Acts as primary department liaison with EVMS Central Financial/Accounting Services function and business needs relating to other EVMS support services, i.e., Human Resources Auxiliary Services.
    8. Serves as department chair’s primary contact from the department to the institution for faculty contracting, recruiting, fiscal implications of promotion and coordination of the practice credentialing process, or supervises delegated staff re: credentialing process.
    9. Assist department chair and vice chair for clinical affairs with policy and procedure development and implementation for intradepartmental business activities and recommendations regarding EVMS institutional business policy and procedures.
    10. Monitors all daily practice support functions to ensure the delivery of quality healthcare. Continuously ensures that the practice conforms to EVMS HS Quality Standards and all applicable federal, state and local laws and regulations.
    11. Maintains a customer-focused practice environment with a monitoring process to provide feedback to faculty and staff.
    12. Monitors clinical productivity; tracks monthly statistics and prepares reports for EVMS HS and the departments.
    13. Coordinate efforts to assess and improve the quality of clinical activities and support operations of the practice.
    14. Prepares or supervises preparation of a biannual departmental report




    BS or equivalent experience required, MBA/MHA preferred.



    8 or more years of progressively responsible experience in group practice management to include capital/operational budgeting and financial analysis, marketing, and strategic planning; experience in an academic practice plan, community teaching center or large multi-specialty group practice preferred.
