  • Overview

    Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Major Gifts and Annual Giving and working closely with Senior Associate Vice President of Development & Alumni Relations and volunteer leadership to build and sustain a vibrant annual giving program that provides an increasing level of ongoing support for current operations. The Director of Annual Giving will develop the EVMS Fund campaign, setting annual dollar objectives, establishing strategies to reach those objectives and monitoring progress against those objectives.

    The Director of Annual Giving provides leadership in designing, implementing and evaluating programs to build a long term base of support for Eastern Virginia Medical School. The goal of the EVMS Fund is to raise unrestricted funds for operations, scholarships and other areas of greatest need within EVMS. The Director will create, implement and evaluate a comprehensive, multi-year plan to increase strategic solicitation of financial support from alumni, the community, and faculty/staff of EVMS to increase overall annual giving.

    The Director of Annual Giving will develop and implement a comprehensive annual giving plan and calendar. The Director’s objective is to increase total annual donations and gift revenue from alumnae, parents, faculty/staff, friends, community and other segments.


    • Works with the Executive Director, Major Gifts and Annual Giving and Senior Associate Vice President of Development & Alumni Relations to set performance goals for the annual fund, and strategies to achieve them.
    • Creation, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive, multi-year plan to increase the number of donors and financial support to EVMS. The Director will design and execute an annual giving program that is clear in its expectations, consistent (over a multi-year time period) and that has demonstrable outcomes.
    • Organizes annual giving solicitations, including timing and nature of appeals, writing copy, working with outside vendors (as necessary) to manage all aspects of production. Methods include direct mail letters, e-communications, videos and website landing page. Writes and/or edits direct mail solicitation materials as necessary.
    • Coordinates and facilitates all components of personal peer solicitations for the EVMS Fund for the President, Board of Trustees, and selected development officers as appropriate.
    • Lead project manager for donor acquisition program. Manages relationship with outside vendor(s) to create an effective year-long fundraising program. Creates an ongoing comprehensive direct mail and phoning program to solicit gifts from patients, community members and alumni. Meets regularly with vendor to provide feedback and to modify strategies to increase giving. Evaluates data and communication to ensure both align with institutional goals.
    • Serves as the lead project manager for the annual Employee Giving Campaign. Develops a comprehensive marketing plan. Manages and trains a group of employee volunteers that serve as campaign team captains. Tracks participation and monies raised throughout campaign and year. Maintains new employee orientation calendar and schedules staff for EVMS Development module of presentation. Solicits new employees within first month of hire.
    • Maintains communications with EVMS Fund donors to encouraging long-term relations.
    • The Director also will work closely with the Senior Associate Vice President of Development & Alumni Relations and Executive Director, Major Gifts and Annual Giving and others regarding hiring and managing appropriate outside vendors, as necessary.
    • Ability to deal with the complexity inherent in a medical school environment, and be able to explain and promote annual giving strategies within that context.
    • Continually and effectively report on results and utilizing benchmarks.
    • Coordinates efforts between the areas of annual giving programs, advancement services and gift & pledge processing by meeting regularly to address issues and concerns.
    • Performs other duties as assigned.


    Develop and manage annual fund and phoning budgets.


    • Bachelor’s Degree
    • Eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in Annual Giving fund raising, with experience in higher education or academic health center with a solid understanding of fundraising principles and methodologies. A combination of fund raising and marketing experience will also be considered. A Master’s degree is preferred.
    • Thorough understanding of a development operation in a complex environment.
    • Excellent organizational and follow-through skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and see projects through to a timely completion. Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.
    • Demonstrated ability to manage staff.
    • Commitment to providing excellent customer service.
    • Experience in developing and implementing strategies for achieving operating goals.
    • Experience in budget planning and oversight.
    • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
    • Experience with complex database required.
