Overview

The Public Safety Officer provides safety and security services for the EVMS Campus through active patrols and manning stationary posts. The Public Safety Officer directs traffic, provides vehicle assistance (jump starts, flat tires, lock outs), and ensures safe movement of people and vehicles throughout the campus. The Public Safety Officer monitors building ingress, registers visitors, and provides directions. The Public Safety Officer ensures building and facility security and integrity through periodic patrol and inspection of all buildings and grounds during tours of duty. The Public Safety Officer is an identifiable ambassador for EVMS and is expected to be courteous, helpful, and knowledgeable of the EVMS Campus, services, and policies.

Responsibilities

  • This position is “safety sensitive” in that the Public Safety Officer performs duties directly impacting the safety of themselves and others, has access to confidential information, operates motor vehicles, and carries defensive weapons. 
  • Ensure the safety of all students, employees, patients, and visitors, and provide security for buildings, equipment and other property through active patrolling.
    • Demonstrate the ability to observe activities, conditions, and persons and take appropriate actions to correct, intercede, prevent, and/or report observations as appropriate.
    • Conduct routine patrols of the campus, parking facilities, and buildings
    • Know campus locations, street names, building names and addresses, designated parking locations to provide adequate directions and information.
    • Detect safety and security concerns such as suspicious individuals, vehicles, and/or situations and handles concerns appropriately.
    • Detect and handle policy and safety violations (no tobacco, parking violations, crosswalks, etc).
    • Appropriately take control of incidents to ensure the safety of persons and maintain security of the scene.
    • Escort students, employees and others across campus after hours or when there are safety/security concerns.
    • Properly identify persons requesting access to secured and restricted areas.
    • Operate motor vehicle, golf cart, and low speed vehicle.
    • Able to competently perform duties of all posts assigned to Public Safety Officers. 
  • Respond to calls for services in a prompt and professional manner and handle the service request following appropriate procedures.
  • Monitor radio transmissions and respond appropriately when dispatched to calls for service.
  • Monitor radio transmissions to be aware of incidents to which other officers may be dispatched.
  • Respond in a timely manner to all calls.
  • Respond promptly and safely to emergency calls and differentiate between levels of response (code 1, 2, 3).
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform during an emergency following appropriate policies and procedures with minimal supervision.
  • Respond to incidents and prepare appropriate reports in accordance with departmental policy.
  • Notify the appropriate supervisor if required by the situation.
  • Proficient in completing incident and other required reports with minimal errors.
  • All pertinent information is included and ensures that all appropriate spaces are completed.
  • Complete and submit reports for review prior to the end of shift. Notifies supervisor if circumstances exist that may prevent the report from being completed by the end of shift.
  • Know the different types of reports completed by Campus Police and Public Safety and the circumstances in which different reports are applicable.
  • Document time, date, location, responding parties, and other pertinent information on the Campus Police and Public Safety Activity Report.
  • Inform individuals of the Campus Police and Public Safety policy on the availability of reports and provide the appropriate report number to the individual.
  • Assist outside law enforcement agencies having official business within the campus
  • Knowledgeable of HIPPA and FERPA regulations and the responsibility of Public Safety when dealing with outside agencies
  • Ensure the safe and efficient flow of traffic throughout the EVMS Campus
  • Monitor vehicle and pedestrian traffic for safety issues, proper signage, and adherence to regulations.
  • Provide pedestrian crossing assistance as needed.
  • Provide traffic direction assistance for construction, accidents, special events, emergencies, etc.
  • Notify Campus Police Officers of drivers violating laws (cross-walks, speeding, DUI, etc.).
  • Miscellaneous Duties and Responsibilities
  • Keep assigned work area neat and clean prior to leaving post.
  • Responsible for the safe keeping, proper use, and maintenance of all assigned and issued equipment.
  • Report lost, damaged, or stolen equipment immediately to supervisor.
  • Model the EVMS and Public Safety values of friendliness, approachability, and exceeding customers’ expectations.
  • Follow the policies of EVMS and the policies and procedures of the EVMS Department of Police and Public Safety.
  • Other lawful, reasonable and related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required. Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in Police Science, Criminal Justice or related field preferred. Two years experience in security, law enforcement, or related field required. Must maintain basic qualifications in first aid and CPR.

 

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • The Public Safety Officer must successfully complete Campus Security Officer Training within 6 months of employment.
  • The Public Safety Officer must successfully complete FEMA IS-100HE and IS-200 within one year of employment.
  • The Public Safety Officer must have a valid Driver’s License from his/her State of residency.
  • IAHSS Basic Certification preferred
