Overview

Responsible for front and back office procedures.  Also assists Physicians and Advanced Practice Providers with medical examination of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Review patient lab results, discuss abnormal findings with the physician and follow up with patient in regard to treatment as necessary.
  • Takes vital signs such as height, weight, temperature, and blood pressure and enters into EHR.  May draw blood and give injections under the immediate supervision of a Physician or RN. 
  • Reviews intake forms with the MD/NP/PA when needed to determine what services best suit the patient.
  • Performs phone triage with supervision of LPN/RN, completes team tasks, paperwork and faxes as needed.
  • Manages specimens that are being picked up and drop off.
  • Chaperones when appropriate and assists during certain minor surgeries and diagnostic procedures (such as Hysteroscopies).
  • Maintains a clean and sterile environment in the examination rooms and triage area. Ensuring all rooms are stocked with medical supplies, as well as, clean and sterilized instruments. Dispose of contaminated supplies and medical instruments. Inventories and reorders supplies as needed.
  • Prepare education packets.
  • Check EMR tasks daily and document patient’s chart.
  • Complete drug refills as directed.
  • Organizes and manages medicine closet.
  • Change wound dressings. 
  • Assists with scheduling conflicts.
  • Explain treatments and procedures to patients.

 

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES AS NEEDED:

  • Answers incoming telephone calls and refers calls as necessary.  Also responsible for taking messages, paging doctors when appropriate, handling hospital consults, and answering inquiries.
  • Schedules appointments with doctors, calls patients to remind and confirm appointments; reschedules patients from the bump list, and schedules residents’ clinics where appropriate.
  • Greets patients in a courteous manner, marks off names as patients arrive, and notifies nurses/medical assistants/MDs of arrivals.
  • Prepares charts for the next day; creates new patient charts, files and pulls charts and checks charts for referrals and authorization prior to visit.  Also prepares charge tickets.
  • Checks-in and checks-out patients, obtains and writes referrals, when appropriately trained and directed, and schedules outside appointments with specialists.
  • Ensures that appropriate data is obtained (labs, medical records and clinic notes from referring Provider’s office) prior to the appointment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, according to the individual departmental needs; OB/GYN, MIGS, and Urogynecology.

Qualifications

High school diploma plus successful completion of a Medical Assistant program. Equivalent military training will be accepted.  Must have certification (CMA or RMA) . Completion of BLS class and re-certify every 2 years.

 

At least one (1) year of Medical Assistant clinical experience in a physician’s office required.  Must have some working knowledge of computers.  Customer service-oriented individual is required.
