Overview

A postdoctoral scholar position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Petra Popovics in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Cell Biology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. The successful candidate will lead projects exploring transcriptome/proteome/lipidome of the prostate in mouse models of inflammation and hyperplasia as well as in human specimens and will perform chemical, biological, molecular biological, surgical or other laboratory tests and procedures in support of these projects. Highly motivated, hard-working, and technically skilled applicants with relevant experience are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

 

  • Sets up, adjusts and operates laboratory equipment and instruments such as microscopes, centrifuge, agitators, chemical balance scales, spectrophotometer, thermocycler, colorimeter and other equipment.
  • Write up manuscripts and help with grant applications
  • Keep laboratory records in an organized manner.
  • Records test results on standardized forms and writes test reports describing procedures used. 
  • Tissue culture, laboratory bench, molecular biology.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment.
  • Familiarize with all software used in the PI`s laboratory and assist trainees in learning to use the software.
  • Understand the usual biological applications, cell handling techniques, and reagents used by researchers.
  • Train new lab members and mentor trainees.
  • Explore new experimental techniques that may benefit the research activities in the laboratory.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

PhD or MD degree in biomedical sciences or related field.  Prior experience in the following techniques is will be prioritized: tissue culture, western blotting, PCR, immunohistochemistry, imaging, immunoassays, mouse handling and surgical techniques. Experience at least in some of the following techniques is preferred: RNA-seq, mass spectrometry and bioinformatic analysis tools.
