Overview

The Standardized Patient Educator (SPE) will support operations related to the Center’s standardized patient program.  The SPE’s role is to assist the Senior Standardized Patient Educators in implementing the SP methodology within the Center’s guiding principles of curricular design to include best practice in standardized patient education, lifelong learning through collaborative scholarship, and excellence in a learner-centered curriculum.

 

Primary responsibilities include recruiting, training, supervising, monitoring and remediation of Standardized Patients (SPs) and Teaching Associates (TAs) who portray various types of patients used in high-stakes clinical skills exams for physicians, medical students, and other health profession students.  The SPE will also participate in quality assurance activities intended to ensure standardization and implement retraining or removal of an SP as needed.  In addition, the SPE is also responsible for communicating with faculty and event sponsors to define goals and expected outcomes, and for arranging the technical and logistical requirements for SP activities with both internal and external clients.  

 

Responsibilities

  • Screen and match SPs to cases.
  • Recruit, train, monitor and evaluate SPs and TAs for activities and assessments.
  • Assist in counseling and remediating SPs and TAs.
  • Design, develop, and implement educational materials to include learning objectives, cases, training manuals and videos.
  • Effective use, administration and support of software/hardware used for activities and assessments.
  • Observe videos of SPs for quality assurance purposes to ensure standardization and implement retraining or removal of an SP as needed.
  • Coordinate and assist with implementation of a variety of tasks for Center activities.
  • Actively participate in professional development activities to include ASPE membership.
  • Communicate with Director(s) to discuss achievement of current program goals and to plan and develop new goals.
  • Ability to prioritize resources necessary for program support.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook), learning management systems (e.g. Blackboard), simulation management systems (e.g. Learning Space), and database management.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of related experience. Two (2) years of experience in education and training, and experience with clinical skills center functioning and SP methodology.
