Overview

This is a full time position for an advanced medical assistant, providing outpatient care for our patients and assisting our physicians in all clinical areas of the practice.

Responsibilities

Triage of incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, chief complaint, reconcile medication list, reconcile allergies and prepare patient for the visit.

 

Scan upcoming appointments  and obtain all pertinent medical records and test relating to the office visit – ED records, CT/MRI reports, operative reports and consult report.

 

 Assist physicians with examinations, to include staning in during minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments. Provide basic patient care and examinations as directed.

 

Cross train with other clinical staff to schedule diagnostic procedures, i.e.; mammogram, CT scans, ultrasounds, biopsy, set ip minor procedures, complete lab forms, helping with pharmacy Requests, and procedure clinics entering of all data in the Electronic Medical record. 

 

Health Maintenance Protocols:

Knowledge of office protocols and procedures- post-operative calls, follow-up, missed appointment calls/follow-up, and others per policy

 

Other Protocols and Duties

Review and update medications on the list

Prepare exam rooms for patient visits, restocking of the clinical area and exam rooms. Sterilize instruments when used and maintain medical equipment.

 

Appropriately document interventions in the electronic medical record. Review the chart for completeness, test results.

Patient Education / Self-Management:

Assist provider staff in assessing barriers in care management for specific patients and providing disease specific patient education.

 

Complete all “tasks” assigned to individual team (as well as covering for other MA’s who may be temporarily absent). This includes responding to patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agencies, medication prior authorizations, patient forms and follow up from physicians. All tasks must be reviewed, addressed and marked appropriately before the close of each business day.

 

Respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient phone calls should be answered on the same day they are logged in, before leaving for the day.  If patient is not home at the first attempt, a notation should be made in the medical record.  All patient conversations must be documented in the electronic medical record.

 

Participate in all staff meetings, education lectures and quality improvement activities.

 

Follow EVMS protocols related to infection control, environmental safety and patient confidentiality.  Complete annual recertification for Blood Borne Pathogens, HIPAA Compliance Training, Respiratory FIT and IT Policy.  Maintain current CPR certification and any updates relating to M.A. Certification.

 

Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Successful completion of a Medical assistant program (or equivalent military training) and certification (CMA, CCMA, or RMA) is required or ability to obtain certification within the first 90-days of employment. Must complete a Basic Life Support (BLS) class and re-certify every 2 years.

Previous medical office experience with relevant functions in a doctor's office preferred. Must have some working knowledge of computers.
