Overview

The Chair of the Department of Biomedical and Translational Sciences will be an inspirational scientific leader that will work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators within the department and beyond, fostering excellence in research and discovery, education, and community outreach and service. Consistent with the core values of the institution, the Chair is responsible for the quality of educational and scientific programs within the department. The Chair is further responsible for the overall leadership and management of the department.

Responsibilities

The Chair will be responsible for the Department’s overall management, academic planning, budget, personnel, resource allocation, and programs. They will be actively engaged in the intellectual research, discovery, and development of the department.

 

· Establish and advance the Department’s strategic direction

· Hire and retain outstanding faculty and staff

· Advocate to campus leaders for critical resources, and partner with other units, including with clinical departments to advance the department’s educational and scientific prominence

· Promote and sustain a culture of inquiry and place value on the scholarship of discovery, application, integration, and teaching

· Cultivate a climate of trust and support, active listening, creative management of conflict, problem solving, and interpersonal effectiveness

 

MANAGEMENT AND SUPERVISORY RESPOSIBILITIES:

 

Direct supervisor of division directors, and staff directly providing support to the Chair.

 

CONTACTS:

Students, vendors, faculty, staff, administrators, and public.

 

BUDGETARY RESPONSIBILITY:

Responsible for departmental budget development and oversight.

 

EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITY:

Working with Education Division Director on the planning and development of the Department’s research portfolio.

 

RESEARCH RESPONSIBILITY:

Working with Research Division Director on the planning and development of the Department’s research portfolio.

 

Form highly collaborative teams working within a strategic context to achieve academic and research growth

 

Qualifications

· Doctoral or advanced degree (e.g. PhD, MD) from an accredited institution in biomedical sciences and/or related field.

· 10+ year record of professional, scholarly, and educational accomplishments as a faculty member, with research related to biomedical sciences disciplines.

· 5+ years of engagement and knowledge of an academic healthcare environment, including the integration of education and research initiatives.

· 5+ years of analyzing, planning, and implementing strategic initiatives and experiences for the Department.

· 3+ years of experience aligning financial, personnel, and space resources to meet operational needs and strategic plans.
