Overview

Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University, within the Department of Medicine, Division of Endocrine & Metabolic Disorders, is seeking a dedicated, full-time RN & Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) to join our dynamic team at the Strelitz Diabetes Center. The ideal candidate will be responsible for designing and implementing individualized, evidence-based diabetes education programs in alignment with the American Diabetes Association (ADA) standards. The CDE will collaborate with multidisciplinary healthcare providers to promote optimal diabetes care and enhance the quality of life for patients living with diabetes. As an RN, the candidate will also assist in all general endocrine related procedures and nursing needs.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and Deliver Diabetes Education: Create, customize, and deliver comprehensive diabetes education programs for patients with diabetes, focusing on self-management, lifestyle changes, and disease prevention.
  • Individual and Group Sessions: Lead both one-on-one and group education sessions to promote diabetes self-management, empowering patients with the knowledge and skills needed to manage their condition effectively.
  • Patient Assessment and Progress Evaluation: Assess each patient’s readiness to learn, develop individualized education plans, and monitor their progress throughout the educational process. Adjust education methods and content as needed based on patient response.
  • Program Planning and Management: Oversee the planning, implementation, and ongoing evaluation of the diabetes self-management program, ensuring it meets ADA standards and aligns with patient care objectives.
  • Collaboration with Healthcare Providers: Work closely with physicians, nurses, dietitians, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate patient care and ensure that diabetes education is integrated into overall treatment plans.
  • Accreditation and Reporting: Maintain the program’s ADA accreditation by managing applications, preparing and submitting annual reports, and ensuring ongoing compliance with ADA standards.
  • Endocrine and Diabetes Care Support: Assist healthcare providers in addressing the management needs of patients with diabetes and other endocrine-related conditions, including supporting diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • General Nursing Support: Provide additional nursing care and support as needed to patients with diabetes and other endocrine disorders.
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Educational Requirements: Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) required.
  • Licensure: Must be a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) in the state of Virginia.
  • Certification: Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE) credential or Board Certified in Advanced Diabetes Management (BC-ADM) required.
  • Experience: Previous experience in diabetes education and management, preferably in an endocrinology or related healthcare setting, is highly preferred.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to effectively work with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Ability to assess patient needs, customize educational content, and track patient progress.
  • Knowledge of diabetes management, including pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative healthcare team.
