Overview

Business Management is seeking a Financial Analyst to join the administrative team for the Macon and Joan Brock Virginia Health Sciences at Old Dominion University (VHS).  The Financial Analyst reports to the Executive Director for Business Management and will be responsible for providing financial reconciliations and financial analysis for all assigned areas within VHS. This position works in collaboration with Department financial administrators and other leaders of VHS to ensure financials/budgets are aligned with the overall University’s financial goals and policies.

Responsibilities

General Summary


  • Reconciles grant expenses for billing to the ODU Research Foundation
  • Serves as liaison for requests between the University and the EVMS Foundation
  • Provides analysis of departmental general funds, discretionary and endowment funds when needed
  • Assists in financial analysis regarding projected changes in revenue and expenditures
  • Provides support to the departments in monitoring and reconciling departmental expenses compared to budget
  • Ensures compliance with University financial and administrative policies
  • Provides training for others in budget related policies and procedures
  • For small departments, serves as their financial support
  • Assists departments in the development of budgets and budget projections
  • Other duties as assigned



Essential Job Functions


  • Develops and analyzes complex financial data and extracts and defines relevant information; interprets data for the purpose of determining past financial performance and/or to project a financial position, prepares written analyses and initiates invoices.
  • Assists in the development of budget targets and budget projections for all types of budgets, including operating, endowment, gift, discretionary and sponsored grants and contracts.
  • Confers with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure that required budget policies and procedures are followed. Provides instructions and answers questions relating to budget procedures
  • Monitors monthly expenditures and revenues compared to budget and gathers supporting documentation. Analyzes significant discrepancies and prepares written summary document
  • Assists in the year-end closing process for VHS by creating and running both standard and ad-hoc reports, analyzing results and research any discrepancies. Resolves disputes by working with the individual departmental contacts and prepare written analysis of resolutions
  • Initiates cost transfers, budget changes and interdivisional charges.  Completes necessary documents and forms, applies appropriate codes and follows established processing procedures
  • Locates and complies information and formats reports, graphs, tables, records and other sources of information
  • Maintains records through filing, retrieval, retention, storage, compilation, updating and purging
  • Heavy use and extensive understanding of applications, such as Excel to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or reports.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or related field
  • Prior experience with responsibility in finances/accounting
  • Proficiency in the use of software applications, databases, spreadsheets, and word processing.
  • Additional education (master's in a related field) preferred, but not required.
