Overview

Position assists Physicians and Nurses with patient care to include triage and stocking supplies. Also prepares patients for provider visits and assisting providers with procedure. Position includes responsibility to assist with front and back-office procedures to include scheduling appointments, checking-in and out patients. This includes but is not limited to, covering and assisting in other Department of Medicine Divisions.

Responsibilities

Triage incoming patients by obtaining vital signs, reconcile current medication list, reconcile allergies, and determine chief complaint. 

 

Administer injections of medications or immunizations in accordance with approved nursing protocol or standing orders and document appropriately in the patients' electronic medical record. Observe patient for any adverse reactions. 

 

May preform PPD tests 

 

Assist physicians with examinations, minor surgeries, diagnostic procedures, and treatments. Implement standing orders when applicable. Provide basic care as ordered. 

 

Appropriately document all nursing interventions in the electronic medical record. Review chart for completeness, test results and billing 

 

Provide patient teaching/education with medications. 

 

 Review and work/complete all "tasks" assigned to you and your individual team (as well as covering for other nurses who may be absent). This will include responding to patient messages, prescription refills, lab results, referrals, home health agencies, medication prior authorizations, patient forms and 6 follow up from physicians. 

   

Schedule specialist appointments and obtain referral from insurance companies as needed. 

   

Obtain lab/CT/MRI/Biopsy results from outside sources, as needed and scan into the patient's electronic medical record. This includes reviewing upcoming appointments and obtaining prior to the Appt. Notify providers with critical labs 

   

Call test/lab results to patients and answer questions regarding those results and physician instructions. 

   

Respond to questions from patients, family members, faculty/residents, other health care providers in a timely and professional manner. Patient phone calls should be answered or documented the same day they are received. All patient conversation must be documented in the chart, as well as attempts to reach patient

 

PATIENT CONFIDENTIALITY MUST BE MAINTAINED AT ALL TIMES.

 

Qualifications

Successful completion of a Medical Assistant program. Equivalent military training will be accepted.  Must have certification (CMA or RMA). Completion of BLS class and re-certify every 2 years. Medical assistant experience required. Customer service-oriented individual is required.

Ability to balance multiple priorities and tasks.  Able to make professional decisions and have the qualifications and knowledge to support it.  Must have knowledge of computers.  Customer service-oriented individual is required.  Prior experience working in a physician office preferred.

 

At least one year of experience in a “fast-paced” medical office /clinical area is required.
