Overview

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at EVMS is seeking a board-certified or board-eligible Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) physician to join our academic faculty. This position offers the opportunity to practice in a high-acuity, multidisciplinary setting while also contributing to the teaching and research missions of a leading academic medical center.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient and outpatient consultative care in Maternal-Fetal Medicine, including:
    • Management of complicated pregnancies
    • Prenatal diagnosis and fetal ultrasound
    • Genetic counseling and testing coordination
    • Procedures such as amniocentesis, CVS, and cerclage
  • Participate in labor and delivery coverage and multidisciplinary case management
  • Supervise and educate medical students, residents, fellows, and advanced practice providers
  • Participate in clinical or basic science research, quality improvement initiatives, and scholarly activities
  • Collaborate with other subspecialties and departments to provide comprehensive patient care
  • Engage in departmental and institutional service roles as needed

 

Outpatient Clinical Responsibilities

  • Consultative Complex OB Care: Provide ongoing antenatal management and consultations for patients with maternal or fetal complications, including but not limited to:
    • Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy
    • Diabetes mellitus and endocrine disorders
    • Cardiac disease in pregnancy
    • Multifetal gestation
    • History of adverse pregnancy outcomes
    • Preterm labor/preterm birth risk
  • Prenatal Diagnosis & Genetic Counseling
    • Interpret and counsel patients on genetic screening and diagnostic testing options
    • Collaborate with genetic counselors for integrated patient care
    • Offer and perform procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling (CVS)
    • Manage counseling for abnormal ultrasound or laboratory findings
  • Obstetric Ultrasound and Imaging
    • Perform and interpret ultrasounds, fetal echocardiography, and targeted imaging studies
    • Participate in quality assurance and protocol development for ultrasound services
    • Supervise sonographers and imaging fellows (if applicable)

Inpatient Clinical Responsibilities

  • Labor & Delivery Triage and Management
    • Supervise and manage complex obstetric patients in labor and delivery, including those with medical/surgical complications
    • Direct or supervise emergency OB interventions, maternal resuscitation, and high-acuity deliveries
  • Antepartum Service
    • Provide inpatient consults and primary management for hospitalized pregnant patients with complex conditions
    • Manage periviable pregnancies, preeclampsia, PPROM, and fetal growth restriction
  • Obstetrical Procedures
    • Perform and supervise procedures such as:
      • Cerclage placement
      • Amnioreduction or amnioinfusion
      • External cephalic version
      • Invasive diagnostic or therapeutic fetal procedures, such as shunts
  • Teaching & Supervision
    • Serve as attending physician on clinical rotations involving medical students, OB/GYN residents, MFM fellows, and Advanced Practice Providers
    • Provide real-time teaching during rounds, ultrasound sessions, and labor/delivery care

 

Call Responsibilities

  • Participate in shared night and weekend call schedule with MFM colleagues
  • Provide backup consultative support to general OB/GYN providers during off-hours
  • Supervise inpatient antepartum and delivery unit coverage, including resident/fellow interactions

Qualifications

Requirements: 

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Obstetrics & Gynecology residency program.
  • Board-certified or board-eligible in Obstetrics & Gynecology.
  • Active state medical license (or eligibility for licensure).
  • Current BLS and ACLS; NRP and other certifications as required by the institution.
