Overview

This internship provides structured, supervised applied learning in health data systems and electronic medical record (EMR) operations within the Center for Engagement & Leadership (CEL). The intern will support the HOPES and Street Health programs by performing data quality reviews, generating reports, assisting with system configuration, and supporting curriculum-delivery tools—all within the context of CEL’s community-engaged health education mission. Work is guided by contextual and content knowledge acquired through the intern’s undergraduate degree; day-to-day supervision will be provided by the CEL Director and the Street Health Facilitator.

Responsibilities

  • EMR Data Quality Review: Review and identify data entry inconsistencies, missing fields, and errors within the EMR system used by HOPES and Street Health. Flag issues for supervisor review and assist with corrections following established protocols
  • Reporting and Data Exports: Generate and format standard reports from the EMR system for program staff, faculty, and clinical supervisors. Compile data summaries to support program evaluation and accreditation reporting.
  • User Support and System Configuration: Assist program staff, students, and preceptors with day-to-day EMR access, account setup, and basic troubleshooting. Escalate unresolved technical issues to the vendor or DTT as appropriate.
  • Interface and Data Exchange Support: Under supervisor direction, assist with reviewing data exchange processes between the EMR and associated systems, flagging discrepancies and documenting workflow steps.
  • Curriculum Support Tools (Medical Spanish): Assist with maintaining and updating digital materials and tools supporting the Medical Spanish curriculum, including content updates and basic system configuration. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Health Informatics, Public Health, Health Sciences, Information Systems, or a closely related field.
  • Demonstrated coursework or experience with data entry, database use, or electronic health/medical records.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established data management procedures.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior exposure to EMR platforms (e.g., Athena, Epic, or similar systems).
  • Experience in a clinical, public health, or community health education environment.
  • Familiarity with HIPAA and health data privacy requirements.
  • Conversational or professional proficiency in Spanish.
