The Simulation Assistant assists with the implementation of the full spectrum of simulation methodologies utilized in the Sentara Center for Healthcare Simulation and Immersive Learning (SCHSIL, or The Center) with an emphasis on device-based simulation.  This person is responsible for operating, maintaining, and repairing computerized manikins, task trainers, and related multimedia peripherals; analyzing and resolving user and interface problems; assisting in the training and education of non-technical users; and advising the Director of Simulation Technology and other Center Directors concerning procurement of hardware, software, and audio/visual equipment involving device-based simulation methodologies. The incumbent works collaboratively with faculty, staff, learners, and Center personnel to provide flexible, responsive, and detail-oriented support that promotes the successful delivery of simulation-based education, training, and research activities.

This staff member needs to be detail-oriented, flexible, self-motivated, and self-directed; able to meet deadlines; demonstrate strong organizational and time management skills; communicate effectively and professionally with staff and clients; be a team player with good problem-solving skills; and have initiative, willingness, and aptitude to learn new technologies.  This individual also needs to have experience working with basic computer hardware and software relevant to simulator functions; familiarity with audiovisual production and editing function; and, proficiency in Windows operating systems, wired and wireless networks, as well as database creation and use. 

CORE COMPETENCIES:

• Set up, operate, break down, and clean simulation events — manikins, task trainers, associated AV, and room reset between sessions
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair simulation equipment, computerized manikins, task trainers, and AV peripherals; analyze and resolve user/interface problems
• Organize and maintain equipment and supply inventory — proper storage, tracking, readiness, and availability to support Center operations
• Support faculty and staff in designing, assembling, and delivering actual, virtual, and web-based training/learning encounters; ensure timely transitions between events by anticipating operational needs and adapting to schedule changes
• Communicate and coordinate promptly and professionally with faculty, staff, learners, vendors, and Center personnel using Elevate, SIMS, MS Office, email, Slack, Teams, Zoom, phone, and SMS; provide updates on event readiness, staffing, and equipment status
• Develop and maintain technical/operational understanding of Center simulation devices and technologies, and working knowledge of the resource footprint/needs of Center training and education activities
• Support Center research activities, including device testing
• Provide flexible support for general Center operations, special projects, and departmental initiatives; perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

• Prior work experience
• Experience with basic computer hardware and software relevant to simulator functions
• Familiarity with audiovisual production and editing functions
• Proficiency in Windows operating systems
• Proficiency with wired and wireless networks
• Proficiency with database creation and use

Preferred Qualifications:

• Prior experience working with healthcare simulators
• SSH CHSOS (Certified Healthcare Simulation Operations Specialist) certification
• Clinical or healthcare background (e.g., EMS, nursing, medical assisting, respiratory therapy, or similar patient-care experience)
• Hands-on experience with major high-fidelity manikin and task-trainer platforms (Laerdal, CAE Healthcare, Gaumard, or comparable)
• Prior experience in a higher-education, academic medical center, or teaching-hospital environment
